Motorcraft DG508 Ignition Coil vs. Standard Brand

For almost all auto parts these days there are "options". It can get pretty complicated. I am going to use the Ford Motorcraft DG508 Ignition Coil as an example. It fits a huge number of Ford cars and trucks that I will list at the bottom of the page. The Ford distributorless ignition engines are very well designed and use these "coil over" modules that sit on top of the spark plug. Most cars and trucks that use this part won't even need to do a tune-up or replace any of them for the first 100,000 miles. After that the coils begin to go bad, one at a time usually. Since the original Motorcraft part number DG508 typically sells for somewhere between $50 -$80 each, buying eight at one time would be devastating. At Autopartstomorrow we sell this part for about $37, which is a HUGE savings, but I am just getting started.

We also have a couple of Standard Brand ignition coils that are built to exactly the same specs, but sell for much less. The DG508 equivalent in Standard brand is FD503 and sells at Autopartstomorrow for a few dollars less each. Where the real savings add up is by buying the FD503T, which is built overseas, but carries the same warranty and are only around $17 each. For that price you may even be able to replace all of them.

If you are going to keep your vehicle forever we always advise to replace with original equipment parts. But if you are like most people and need to save some money to get your car going again for another 4-5 years, sometimes the savings on an aftermarket part can be quite helpful. Why is the freight on my oil filter more than the part?

As a wholesale auto parts company, our pricing has very little markup included. As a result we need to charge the actual shipping costs up until a certain level, where we can ship and also pay freight. Most people attempt to add additional needed wholesale items until they get to the free freight level (oil filters, air filters, wiper blades, etc.). At $75 most of our coupon codes are activated (check on Facebook for current codes) and free ground freight is included. Volume purchases or high dollar items make the most sense...

Professional Discount Anyone? Just Tell a Friend

So, You're a Professional... or at least act like one? I have an Autopartstomorrow.com coupon code that I have been sharing with several auto mechanics over the past few weeks to entice them to try us out. (Coupon Code NDP13)* We normally cannot really share a discount this size (13% plus free shipping on $75 orders) with everyone, because it honestly sometimes brings the auto parts prices below what we paid for them. Once you find us you will be back. We really do offer wholesale car parts pricing to EVERYONE. We just like to use the codes to introduce ourselves. A good automotive technician has many options in where and how to buy their auto parts (probably too many). Once they find us, they know enough to understand the savings. We just need to attract their attention a little bit, and then they are hooked.

Now, how does that help the DIY auto parts customer? Volume is how we keep our prices low. We already sell directly to dealerships, jobber stores, retail stores, mechanics and garages. Adding the public to this keeps our inventory moving. In all honesty, each of these customer types buys a little bit different mix of car parts. If we supply parts to the entire breadth of these consumers, we increase the width of our auto parts lineup. It also allows us to sell these automotive parts at a much lower price. Buying in volume allows us the greatest discounts available to anyone.

The auto parts industry has always kind of fascinated me with the distribution model we have used for years. The normal model is for a manufacturer (ACDelco, Motorcraft, Bendix, Monroe, etc.) to sell to a warehouse distributor. The WD then sells to a Jobber store, who sells to garages and auto mechanics, who then sell it to the public. It is frowned upon for anyone to step outside of this style of selling. To me, that is kind of like asking a hotdog vendor to only sell his product to people with blue shirts... it just doesn't make much sense.

The problem it creates is that the car parts are marked up with every step. We actually get calls from people who doubt the authenticity of our ACDelco or Motorcraft parts because the prices are too LOW. If you look back at the number of people who need to make money between us and the consumer it kind of makes sense. They all have buildings and stores and employees that need to be paid. Into the Mist...

My family drives mostly older vehicles. One of the perks of selling auto parts is that I am surrounded by many very talented automotive people who are always ready to help diagnose and repair problems that may crop up. It is also good to be around them from a habit forming perspective. If you love cars, you take care of your cars. Knowing that your car has been maintained correctly helps to build the confidence needed to drive cars well past the 200,000 mile mark that 3 of my cars are either approaching or have recently passed.

I have blogged in the past about how I remember in High School standing in awe of anyone with a car aged past the 100,000 mile mark. Now, with the availability of great replacement parts and well engineered vehicles, twice that is normal. I will admit that once you approach that mark, where you get your auto parts becomes more of an issue. However, I would have no problem at all replacing an alternator on Monday, and heading out on a cross country trip on Tuesday.
